Chalk About It
August 2023
We were delighted to take part as one of the partners alongside Wokingham Town Council for this year’s annual ‘Chalk About It’ event in the Town centre.
Chalk About It is a stimulating art-based activity which can help residents express their feelings in a relaxed, open air environment, where they are supported and not judged.
Following the success of last two years again pavement artists Urban Canvas along with local mental health groups brought the power of art, time and space together with the theme ‘Reflecting’
It can feel very difficult to find time for yourself in a fast paced world of varying pressures no matter what age, but it is important for us all to take time to reflect and relax. How we do this is very personal, some people may enjoy a long soak, others may enjoy reading, others may enjoy solo or team sports and/or exercise. One other way we can reflect is through being creative.
Creativity in all its forms can offer a canvas for self expression and self reflection. This year ‘Reflecting’ at Chalk About It through a collaborative artwork that used a repeated image of a mirror neuron to tie into its function linked to learning and emotion. Working collaboratively, all attendees took part to create art that can both show our individuality while making something beautiful that is bigger than our individual selves.

The weather was incredible and it was a busy day from start to finish, meeting lots of talented people of all ages who joined in the collaborative larger piece or their own painting or Chalk shape where they let the creativity flow. It truly was an incredible day and we loved meeting all, we are already looking forward to next year!
Domestic abuse has many impacts long and short term including on mental health and wellbeing, so it was really nice to be included in something so community focused. Our volunteers also had the chance to let the creativity out and thoroughly enjoyed the day, thank you to all involved and those that took part or admired the art of others.
